What is an options expiry?

Options expiry is the last day where the holder of the option may exercise it based on the conditions of the option. CommSec will automatically exercise any long options position that is in the money by one cent or more for equity options, or 0.1 points or more for index options. ASX Clear (formerly Australian Clearing House) generally lists the series for a period of three weeks for weekly options and a minimum period of six months for monthly expiries – and as one series expires, a new, more distant one is created.

The expiry date for exchange traded options is usually the third Thursday of the expiry month or generally Thursday for Weekly Options. ASX Clear has the right to change these dates should the need arise.

A copy of the options and futures exchange expiry calendar can be found on the ASX website by clicking here or by contacting the CommSec Options desk on 1800 245 698 or +61 2 9115 1532 if calling from outside Australia, 8 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday (Sydney time)
